During the First 9 Weeks of school (until the beginning of Oct.) we will be learning about all aspects of Music, but students will be assessed on the following standards-
A. Skills and Techniques/Performance
M3GM.1 – Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
a. Sing melodies in the range of an octave using appropriate head voice accompanied and unaccompanied.
C. Critical Analysis/Investigate
M3GM.6 – Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
b. Describe music using appropriate vocabulary (allegro, adagio, forte, piano, upward, downward), appropriate mood, and timbre adjectives.
Under Skills a Techniques, I am specifically assessing the student's ability to accurately sing melodies in the range of an octave (do, re mi- all the way to do) using head voice (singing voice that resonates in your head and sinus cavities instead of your chest.
In addition to these assessed standards, we will start preparing our music for the 3rd grade Veteran's Day program. I hope that each child participates in the evening program. It is a very special experience for all involved. This year it will be on Thursday, November 3rd.
Slow and steady wins the race! We have done a very slow intro to recorder playing and soon we will start the Recorder Karate program. I still have recorders and books for sale. If your child would like one, please send the money in an envelope to school. Recorders are $7 and books are $5.
We will be playing recorders in class starting on Jan. 29. Please make sure you bring your recorder and book from home.
This 9 weeks our 3rd graders will be focusing on reading the pitches of the treble clef staff and playing and singing pentatonic patterns consistently and with correct technique. The majority of our time will be spent doing this with our recorders. Soon, students will be introduced to the basics of the recorder and then we will begin our Recorder Karate program where students can advance at their own pace and only the sky is the limit. As needed, I will post tutorial videos to help students at home. Once we start recorder, students should bring them to music every day. If any student does not have, or forgets a personal recorder, I will have the classroom set available and each child will be responsible for cleaning and using the classroom recorder. The classroom books and recorders are for classroom use only and cannot be take home.
If your child does not have a recorder and forgot to purchase one from school, I purchased extras. Send in $7.00 in a student envelope labeled recorder to purchase one of the extras I have.
Right now we are working on playing an independently, while following cues from the conductor and while others are playing different parts. This allows all students to shine on the part they are comfortable playing!
We are enhancing literature with a song all about a poor Thanksgiving Turkey!
We are also preparing to start our recorders in January. Reading the line and spaces of the treble clef staff can be tricky, but ask your students about some tricks of the trade I have been introducing them to.
Throughout December, we will starting singing Carols and continue work with reading the staff.
The program was wonderful! Thank you students for all your hard work and parents for having them participate.
The 3rd grade program will be next Tuesday, November 3 at 6:00. Students should wear red, white and/or blue shirts with pants, shorts or skirts that have pockets in the back. I hope to see everyone there!
